For an HVAC technician, no day is the same. Each day presents unique customer situations and service requests. While the day-to-day work of an HVAC technician may vary, there are certain tasks that they generally perform on a regular basis.
Let’s take a closer look at a typical day of a HVAC technician and what a day in the life of an HVAC technician really entails.
HVAC Technician Day in the Life
At the start of an HVAC technician day in the life, most technicians check their messages and emails to see what service calls they have scheduled. Before they begin their workday, they must also check all the tools and equipment they will need. This includes gauges, pressure tanks, pipes, fittings, compressors, motors, pumps and other tools. They must make sure their vehicles are properly stocked with parts and supplies needed for the day’s job.
Once this is done, it’s time to hit the road! Technicians must drive to their assigned customer locations and inspect their HVAC systems. During inspections, technicians check for any signs of wear and tear or malfunctioning parts within the system. They then run diagnostic tests to further assess the issue. Often times a technician will diagnose a problem before performing any repairs. They use their knowledge of HVAC systems, sensors and controls to locate the source of the issue. Then they may replace parts or adjust settings to get the system running again.
After diagnostics are complete, technicians provide customers with repair options and estimates. In some cases, repairs can be made on the spot. However, more complex issues may require ordering parts or scheduling a follow-up appointment. Once all repairs are completed, technicians perform system maintenance to help prevent future issues. This may include tasks such as cleaning filters, checking fans and motors, and replacing belts.
At the end of each HVAC technician day in the life, they document all repairs that have been completed and provide customers with information on how they can take better care of their HVAC systems going forward. After a day of hard work, most technicians wrap up their day by making sure all notes and paperwork have been taken care of.
The job of an HVAC technician is both challenging and rewarding. With their technical knowledge, problem-solving skills and attention to detail, HVAC technicians can keep heating and cooling systems running safely and efficiently.
